Turner Broadcasting Site Visit for CLAS Students: Friday, April 25th

Here’s a SPECIAL OPPORTUNITY for Liberal Arts and Sciences students! Turner Broadcasting in NYC is hosting a site visit exclusively for Liberal Arts & Sciences students on Friday, April 25th from 8:30am to 5:30pm. You will learn about the work of the Advertising Sales areas and meet Villanova alumni who work at the company. OUS Intern Jeremy Menninger, who interned at TurnerBroadcasting in NYC last summer, will be leading this site visit.

You will need to submit a deposit of $20 by Wednesday, April 16th to SAC 107 to hold your spot. The deposit will be returned to you on the trip.

BRIDGE Society Fashion Show Recap [Guest Post: Kristen Leen]

The BRIDGE Society hosted the “Dress to the Nines for Under $99” fashion show on Wednesday, April 3rd. Held in the Dougherty East Lounge, all the money raised was given to the Billy Zimmerman Scholarship Fund at Seton Hall Prep in memory of the Villanova student’s recent passing.

The purpose of the fashion show was to show Villanova students how to put together professional outfits on a college budget. Male and female models each walked the runway twice, first flaunting what TO wear, then showing what NOT to wear to an interview.

Here is a recap of the tips shared.

For Women:

  • IMG_1730copyCover up! No cleavage and show minimal skin.
  • Invest in a great pair of black slacks. They can be dressed up or dressed down.
  • Try a pop of color, a print, or an accessory- but only one! You don’t want to distract your potential employer with a bright print, so pick the bright color OR the print.
  • Keep your jewelry simple. You want them looking at you, not your chunky necklace.
  • Wear that LBD (Little Black Dress), but only if it’s not too tight and not too short. Be sure to class it up with a pair of textured tights or a blazer.
  • Never ever have your bra straps showing. Invest in a Strap Perfect for those tricky tops.

For Men:

  • IMG_1663copyYou can never go wrong with a great blazer or sport coat.
  • Play to your personality with a colored shirt or cool tie. Statement pieces can make a lasting impression.
  • Save the patterned shirts and pants for the summer. Striped pants or Hawaiian button-ups are never acceptable for an interview.
  • Looks can kill, and so can shoes! While Villanova men love their Sperry’s, trade them for loafers when meeting a potential employer.

The fashion show was successful in giving students some ideas of what is appropriate and what is not. Several members of the audience won raffle prizes donated by local businesses like Maloney’s, Gullifity’s, and Skirt and yummy refreshments were provided, making for a great event!

5. The Washington Center Information Session

  • Attend an informational session to learn about the Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars: an independent, nonprofit organization serving hundreds of colleges and universities in the United States and other countries by providing selected students challenging opportunities to work and learn in Washington, D.C. and London, England, for academic credit. The largest program of its kind, The Washington Center has 70 full-time staff and more than 50,000 alumni, many of whom are in leadership positions in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors.

6. Nonprofit Mentoring & Networking Event

  • Learn how alumni and professionals have incorporated their mission-oriented values in their professional choices. Students will be grouped with a professional mentor to discuss the industry and their individual career journey, followed by an open networking event for all attendees.

BRIDGE Society Event Recap [Guest Post: Samantha Marinelli]

Below is a guest post by Samantha Marinelli, a member of BRIDGE Society and the BRIDGE Social Media Committee.

Last Thursday, the BRIDGE Society held a Networking and Mentoring event in the West Lounge with professionals in the fields of Psychology, Sociology, and Education. Over forty students attended to hear from these professionals about respective fields and to ask questions about their experiences—professionally or even personally.

photo2The room was set up very comfortably for conversation. There were small circles of chairs where several students sat with a few professionals in each groups. In my particular group, we had professionals who were all associated with the educational system Katina Sawyer, a Villanova alumna, and now a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University, shared her experiences about deciding on her undergraduate major, which ultimately led to where she is today. Through her professional career Katina has obtained a dual-Ph.D. in “I.O” or Industrial Organizational Psychology as well as Women’s Studies. It was fascinating to learn how Katina combined the industrial and corporate aspect of Psychology with the treatment of women in the workplace. The majority of her researched focused on this combination of topics. This was fascinating and showed that any combination of majors or specializations IS possible, if that’s what you’re interested in.

We were also joined by Seton M. Feeney, a Villanova alumna who majored in English, who went on to Columbia to obtain a Masters in Social Work. Her work now, at Oakland Public Schools in New Jersey, assesses students in pre-school through eighth grade to determine their needs for special education or case management programs. This was a very different road to take from her previous desire to work in journalism or public relations with her English degree.

Kelly O’Leary, also a Villanova alumna, works as Principal of St. Martin de Porres Academy in New Haven, Connecticut. This faith based, volunteer and fundraising driven, academy helps to break the cycle of poverty through education. Ms. O’Leary received her undergrad at Villanova in Biology. She found of her love for service through Campus Ministry and was inspired to take a gap year to volunteer; photothis ultimately became her fulltime job after receiving a Masters in Teaching.

Each of these women, and the other professionals, gave us plenty of insight on not only maneuvering the professional world, but how to get the most out of our time spent at Villanova.We were encouraged to take advantage of all of the great experiences right at our fingertips. Below I’ll highlight some lessons that stuck out for me. I jotted down these quick tips and quotes , as they really rung true to me:

• Don’t burn your bridges. You never know when you might need someone’s help down the road.

• You never know where opportunities are going to develop. Let them!

• Be self aware. Know the kind of person you are, your likes and dislikes, strengths and weaknesses, and play off of those. “Stupider people than I have attempted.” You can do it!

• Playing off of that, “assume competence.” You can do just about anything you set your mind to.

• Consider other points of view. No matter your major or field of study, you will work with other people some day with differing opinions than yours. Have an open mind.

• Show up on time, always! Be polite in the work place and respectful to co-workers. And definitely do not text on the job.

• Learn the expectations at a place you are or wish to be, and exceed them. This will help you become a leader.

• Get involved! Make choices that will benefit you and show that you are a leader. Take every opportunity to get.

2. Final Exam Schedule

  • Please consult the Final Examination Schedule located at the below link BEFORE making your travel plans at the end of the semester. Final exams CANNOT be changed due to travel plans as the Final Examination is available well ahead of time. If you have more than two exams scheduled on any given day, you have the right to reschedule one of them. Speak to your professors now to determine which professor can best accommodate you. Plan now if this is an issue. No exceptions will be made except in extreme circumstances about which documentation can be provided.
