The U.S. Department of Commerce Office of Public Affairs, housed in the Office of the Secretary, is currently seeking interns with a dedication to public service. The Office assists the Secretary on all public affairs and strategic communications matters and serves as a liaison with the White House and Executive Branch agencies on public information matters. Successful candidates will be part of a team that serves as the primary point of contact between the Department and news media, organizations, and the general public.
Among other responsibilities, interns will:
- Help draft press releases, blog posts, and briefing memos for senior staff,
- Perform research in preparation for speeches and public events,
- Compile news clips,
- Update press lists, and
- Develop strategies to enhance the Department’s public outreach.
Qualified interns may also receive hands-on experience with speechwriting and social media.
The unpaid internship can be part-time or full-time. A transportation stipend for local travel is provided.
Requirements: This internship is open to undergraduate students, recent college graduates, or graduate students. The ideal candidate is a self-starter with experience working in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment. Strong writing skills and Microsoft Office proficiency are required. Public affairs, journalism, or political communications background is a plus. Other federal government or Hill experience is recommended, but not required. Experience with social media analytics and graphic design is also preferred, but not required.
